Recent favorite book
I finally got around to reading the curious night-time dog book this week, figuring that as it had won nearly every award going (excepting the Orange Award) and that Billy liked it, it must have something going for it. Also, my sister had a copy lying around and so I didn't have to buy it.
I was underwhelmed.
It's obviously a great technical achievement that immerses you fully in the world of its narrator, but I didn't find it particularly involving or rewarding. It also seemed too apparent to me that it was a childrens book and his digressions towards the beginning ("Here are examples of metaphors. The word metaphor means...") were a little too much like studying a language textbook and, to be honest, they annoyed the crap out of me.
I'm wrong. Everybody else was right, and in my mean-minded 'not offering links' mode, I offer you some articles from the Guardian pointing out themes in this book and how they help to make it wonderful. 1 2 3 4
Kelvin once accused me of wanting to be an American. This made me laugh, for obvious reasons, but I do find myself drawn to the bright lights and violence of American history and culture more readily than I am to our own. Prior to reading the Mark Haddon dog-thing, I read the Ben Mezrich book about a group of MIT students who employed card-counting to great success and made an awful lot of money before the Vegas casinos grew wise to their wiles.
It's (allegedly) all true, and its a gripping tale of brainy boffins attempting to prove that the casinos don't always win at Blackjack. Bearing in mind my previous paragraph (the bit about the bright lights) this is the sort of book that I'm a sucker for anyway, and while I bombed through the pages I was pondering if I could afford to nip back out to Vegas for a weekend.
But, despite my biases, I still thought it was a great read, with one caveat. If it was a Hollywood film (and Kevin Spacey is supposedly working on that) it would have a massive threat fuelled climax, where our plucky card counters pull off the ultimate scam leaving those nasty casino owners stomping on their cowboy hats as our heroes drive off into the sunset. It's not a Hollywood film however, so it just sort of finishes. Pretty much.
Much of the technical jiggery pokery is unfathomable but that's not really the point - the book isn't about taking time out to explain different card-couinting techniques. It's about the atmosphere and the money and the glamour and the sheer fucking gall to get away with it for so long.
Flights are currently a bit expensive, by the way.
